Episode 1 of Under the Chief goes from probation anxiety to a locked-in scene in under a minute: the head nurse is angling to get Harriet dismissed, the chief claims her for the night, sends everyone away and invites her to say stop, and she responds with a curse. The final cue is the point at which sex starts.

The episode opens on Harriet’s inner voice. Tonight ends her trial period, the head nurse is pushing for her dismissal, and the chief will not stop looking at her. The floor is quiet, the surgery is over and it goes dead after that. A colleague says the new arrival will not last the night, and the chief answers that she will be spending it with him.

Harriet stammers an objection. The chief points out that his room is the sole peaceful spot on the ward. She blurts out an apology about her cramped scrubs, and he answers that they suit her perfectly. As a come-on it is neat, because it turns her embarrassment into the compliment.

A staffer interrupts to remind him that a note for the board is due by seven. He tells her to cancel it, tells Vanessa that nobody is to disturb them for a while and adds one word, “Charts.” Harriet starts to protest and trails off. Somebody mutters that he would not, not with her.

The closing lines are the hinge. He invites her to tell him to stop. She does not. The final cue is a single profanity from Harriet, and because the episode ends there, with the door closed and the head nurse outside, I read it as the moment the fucking starts. The captions name no act, so that reading is mine.

Under the Chief episode 2 recap: gossip at the door and a plea not to stop

Episode 2 of Under the Chief continues mid-scene: Harriet apologizes for swearing at the chief, he says the language pleases him and explains that Vanessa’s opposite is exactly who he wanted, staff gossip outside, and the last cue is Harriet urging him on. It runs under a minute and the sex does not pause.

It picks up on the curse from the end of episode 1. She is sorry she swore at the chief on her final night, and his reply is the first warm beat of the series: he likes it. He adds that Vanessa is the opposite of what he wants and that is why he picked Harriet. That is a conversation held in the middle of something, not before it.

Then the captions move to the corridor. Staff outside speculate that he is merely teaching her things, someone calls her a dud, and another points out that they have been in there for quite a while. The wisecrack that she is not his type lands badly against the evidence. A knock follows, and a voice wants to know if the doctor is still inside.

Harriet answers for him. She closes the scene with a gasped “Don’t stop.” The only answer from inside is hers, and the door stays shut.

The structure is neat: the same device Under the Boss uses, a chorus outside the door insisting that nothing is going on, only here the audience knows better. What happens when the door opens is locked. I have not watched episodes 3 to 5.

When does Under the Chief get NSFW?

Under the Chief gets NSFW at the very end of episode 1, when the chief invites Harriet to say stop and she swears instead, and it is still going in episode 2, so explicit content starts in episode 1. The explicit-from field on this page reads 1 for that reason.

• Episode 1, set-up: probation, a jealous head nurse and the chief’s decision to keep Harriet for the night.
